Many of you actually suggested it when I asked for a new show to get into, and I just watched the episode that addressed abortion, contraception, and the desperation women felt for control over their reproductive lives and I just.
I live in Texas, where its popular for the party in power at the state level to demonize abortion, birth control, and sex education. And at the end of the episode, the voiceover compared the pill with travel to the moon, and said that reliable methods of contraception had had a much more tangible impact on the experiences of people than a few “fleeting footsteps” on the moon.
And I just, it resonated so much with me. The leaps and bounds we have made not only for women, but for everyone through the availability of legal, reliable methods of family planning are largely unrecognized now. Rush Limbaugh and his ilk can say that only “sluts” use birth control, because the age of Christian, white, married women (the only women they seem to care about) dying from back alley abortions or drinking turpentine is so far gone it seems like a dream. I think some of them think that pro-choice advocates try to create a more nightmarish picture than is realistic when we say we will NOT go back. The luxury that allows the anti-choice to think that way is a direct result of the legalization of birth control and safe abortions.
And we will never, ever go back. Because we remember. And for once, I am glad to have someone say that this was a feat so important for the future of humanity it can be compared to space travel, because it is.
And that’s why we can’t ever stop fighting for every inch we’ve got. I know I never will.
Every day for choice.
