Sometimes it is really, really easy to get lost in how overwhelmingly shit the politics in this country are right now. The Occupy movements get trampled, misrepresented, and ignored; women’s rights are constantly under attack; voter ID laws attempt to create even more inequality in political representation; and you call and you write letters and you blog and you protest and yet sometimes you still feel so small.
But you know what? Thanks to the people of Wisconsin, I don’t feel small today. I feel re-energized. People in Wisconsin saw that their Governor, tea partier and Koch brother funded Scott Walker, was doing things that were bad for Wisconsin’s citizens. And they got angry. And then, they took action.
People have been singing in at the capitol at lunch every day since Scott Walker was elected. When I was there this summer, there were multiple rallies and marches that drew a wide variety of Wisconsinites. And now, they’ve turned in a petition calling for the a gubernatorial recall election that exceeded the necessary 540,000 with an astounding figure of over 1,000,000 signatures.
We the people are not helpless. We can stand up, speak out, and get change moving in this country. It’s already in motion! And so, tonight, I am going to bake Wisconsin themed baked goods.
